“I learned that there are different types of PTSD …… a simple and complex type. Simple type includes single incidences, like an extreme natural disaster, or accident.

Complex implies a continuous and/ or repeated exposure, like abuse/ trauma, ugly divorces, etc.

Inside of the complex type, there is a large array of symptoms, like shame, self-harm, memory issues, anger, loss of trust, etc.

For me, what struck home was chronic feelings of guilt and feeling like I was bad. I also wrestle with numbness of emotions, dissociating, and long periods where feeling like it is hard to be alive on this planet.

Today I learned that all that I am feeling is a normal response to the abnormal stuff that has been part of my past.

I learned that a huge percentage of folks that get caught up in abusing substance, come from a background of trauma, and that trying to numb emotions and settle feelings is often the main reason to try a substance (or activity like shopping or gambling) to begin with.

Often it is the ‘chicken or the egg first’ where each disorder feeds on the other. The dual disorder has no gender preference, per say.
So today we explored what it will take to feel safe in the context of the course. For the duration of the course, substance elimination is recommended (no prob!!!), while we explore how we each are manifesting symptoms of PTSD and learn to manage and heal them. I am excited to get started…….. I feel optimistic!!

  2. Many ptsd sufferers need hope and examples of people who have faced great adversity but never gave up.

Your journey was not simple or easy. It took many different efforts along your path to heal.
