The Heart of Meditation: Self and ego

One of the ways we know we are experiencing the ego and not the Self is that the ego always experiences itself in comparison to others.
.
.
The ego never feels fully equal to others: it sees others as higher or lower, as better or worse, as friendly or potentially hostile.
.
.
The Self sees everything and everyone as equal to itself.
.
.
The ego bears the same relationship to the Self as a lightbulb does to the electrical current that runs through it.
.
.
The bulb looks as if it gives light independently, but in fact it doesn’t.
.
.
The true source of illumination is the electrical current that runs through the lightbulb.

  1. I love the lightbulb idea – and that Presence is the electric current because it feels just like that to me. When I am in Presence I experience a charge of energy and peace and awareness that releases huge creative impulses in me. Onwards and upwards with the books I write in the energy of Presence and thank you for a lovely post.
