“We might say that loving-kindness acts as a catalyst that alters and reworks the brain’s connections and networks from the inside out.
.
.
It unravels tangled emotions and fears of being hurt and rejected, and then it rewires us with feelings of safety, protection, well-being, and love.
.
.
In this sense, loving-kindness is as much about receiving love as about giving it.
.
.
How can we really love others if we do not first genuinely love ourselves?
.
.
Without such inner hospitality, we will likely push away gifts from others because we are unable to be generous with ourselves.
.
.
Loving-kindness is inner work. There is no SAT test that can measure our capacity for compassion.
.
.
Loving-kindness is also a mind training that helps us grasp the powerful notion that we are not alone in our suffering and pain.
.
.
It gives us the tools to spread compassion outward, when and where we least expect it.
.
.
Although the words of the loving-kindness meditation are simple, they powerfully prime the brain and the body for a completely new kind of experience.
.
.
Loving-kindness is big enough to overcome our smallest and greatest fears.
