People often say that this or that person has not yet found himself. But the self is not something one finds, it is something one creates. ~Thomas Szasz, “Personal Conduct,” The Second Sin, 1973

.
We invent our ego out of past memories, how others treat us along with our own self image, nothing more. Who am “I” has no subject.
.
It is like a still pic that is placed with fifty other pics and flashed as if the movement was real. It is delusion, just a form of identity not a controlling mechanism.
.
They always say you must lose yourself, go below the ego, to find yourself, the true self.
.
Makes sense to me now.
.
We must be present, in the moment to accomplish this task.

  1. What an interesting concept. Danny Thomas presented his daughter Marlo with a lined tablet – told her to write her own story. It made a huge impact on me, so simple, but so true and your example of still pictures is very effective as well. As if we carry around these still pictures like a ball and chain, dragging them behind us and they are not our true self!
