The breath as mind-object defines our practice goal. Mind-object means to focus and bring the senses of feeling and hearing to our breath. Slow the breath down quietly.
-
Direct all listening towards our breath, inside our nostrils as we inhale and exhale. Listen for the sound of the breath as it flows past the bristling nose hairs. The mind wants to speed up to chase cognitive lures.
-
Practice enough and we can become the breath, riding it as inhales build up to a pleasant exhale. The nervous system calms, depleting cortisol with this skill.
-
So, we practice for three breaths at times during the day. Challenge yourself in different situations and places. Train the mind to follow the mind-object for just three breaths.
-
We can all practice for three breaths from time to time during the day. This is the mental action that can heal us. It adds up over a month and then another.
