Handling Trauma

Secretariat Winning the Belmont by 31 lengths.

In an earlier post, it was explained how the mind controlled the response to pain.  This is the signal sent out to the adrenal glands when a serious threat appears imminent.  Cortisol is released by the adrenal glands which stimulates the amygdala and inhibits the hippocampus. While walking for my aerobics a point of exhaustion or fatigue begins, my body wants to quit from the pain and exhaustion

The stress response is then, summoned from a visual that I imagine.  A bear has threatened my wife and kids in the woods and I must defend the family.  You can bring out your stress drugs without PTSD if you practice.  So my cortisol is released and my  nervous system shocks my body to respond with a jolt.  Instead of quitting, the trauma thoughts are inserted as the enemy trying to make us quit.

Now you have established a scenario similar to a panic attack.  Your cortisol levels and panic drugs are flowing and trauma is trying to halt your movement, now your willpower can overcome your trauma.

Benefits are many.  You have summoned the trauma drugs on your own without thoughts of your trauma.  The body knows the feeling of fear is a stress mechanism and not PTSD’s power.  You also have practiced this scenario while moving.  The accomplishment is shared by the body and brain.  This practice can give momentum to your recovery.
